Grace Banu is an Indian Dalit and transgender activist who is the founder of the Trans Rights Now Collective. Aside from that, she rose to fame as the first transgender to be given admission in an engineering college in the state of Tamil Nadu.

  • Banu was raised in the Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu.
  • Being a Dalit, Grace faced a lot of racial discrimination as a child. She was never allowed to go to school during the normal hours of school. According to a statement of Grace, she had to join and leave school half-an-hour after it began and before it ended.
  • Children of other castes were not allowed to communicate with Banu. If caught, they would be punished.
  • Both her gender identity and caste made her vulnerable to negligence by her teachers and parents, hence, forcing her into a suicidal state.
  • In the year 2008, Banu was dismissed by her parents after they learned about the gender identity of their daughter.
  • In the past, Banu founded the Trans Rights Now Collective.
  • It was a businessman who decided to help Grace pay her way through college via a fundraiser.
